Sunburnt and telling your mates......

Many people out there love the sun. I’m not one of them, never have been, nor will i ever be. There are too many things you can enjoy in life without being basted like an oven-done turkey or grilled like a sausage you’ve just put on a home-made barbeque. It’s not a good image to have at the best of times and we’re just not made to look like that. Sorry, but trying to look like a Bulgarian weightlifter is not my thing no matter how many women may find it appealing.

what is appealing to me, on a hot summer’s day, is enjoying a nicely prepared salad in a cool and shaded area, overlooking the sea, with yachts and seagulls, doing what it is that seagulls do the best, in the distance. Somewhere where the overpowering heat of the sun is at its coolest is what i prefer the most. It isn’t everybody’s idea of what paradise should be like, but it IS mine. You’ve got your own idea of what it should be like. and I get that. if it doesn’t involve eating though, you can count me out. I should be on my second ham sandwich as you read this.

The best thing about being a sun hater is, that you don’t have to travel miles to get what you want. You really don’t. If the weather is windy, you won’t even have to fight off competition to get to the bar. It gets better. You can actually play bingo and enjoy some haute cuisine afterwards (faggots and mushy peas to you and me). When the sun comes out, which it will do, do not panic. Think of what it was like to have a deserted beach. Breathe in and remember the good times. Thank goodness you didn’t waste all of that money when you didn’t have to.

Just think of the positives; you haven’t had to learn to speak a foreign language which you’ll probably never use again; the fish and chips over there don’t taste like what they ought to; and the birds over there (let’s face it) are batting way out of your league. You hate to admit it but know it’s true. You’ll get pissed and sleep it off under a really hot sun, your back will be sunburnt and you can spend all summer telling your mates about it.

  1. Slide over, Terry, and make room for another non-sun-lover in your spot of shade. The sun literally makes me ill if I'm out in it for more than a few minutes. That's what comes of a northern European background, I guess. I can feel my scalp tightening as the sun shines on it, then I get chills. It's quite inconvenient, really.

    1. Hi Jenny, the comments keep disappearing and I haven’t a clue why.

  2. Believe it not I hate the summer sun too! Makes you horrid and sweaty, brings tourists like a cloud of flies and ruins your washing. Wish I could move to the Arctic in July and August.
I'll be with you under that shady tree, or inside with the Aircon on full enjoying my fish n chips, away from those damn seagulls too.
In winter you can wear a coat, add an extra blanket. In the sun you just suffer .

  3. Add me three. When I tell you that I describe summer as the sweaty season that says it all. My MS LOVES the heat. I don't. And never have.

  4. "Seagulls, doing what it is that seagulls do the best..." You mean shitting on people and nicking their chips? I have always loved the sun... walking out in T-shirt, shorts and sandals before taking a dip in the sea and swimming out to a distant buoy. But there's a price to pay - I have had skin cancer on my back. Back to the hospital on Friday.

  5. The sun is wonderful...but one has to take care, particularly here in the wonderful Land of Oz. I think we're more aware these days of the dangers of over-exposure to sun rays. When I was a teenager every weekend was spent at the coast surfing .... and loving it. Our days were spent on the beach and in the ocean. My friends and I were tanned...built up steadily over the spring and summer months. There were times,of course, when we overdid it a bit and got sunburned. For a number of years of my life I've lived at coastal areas...including a couple of islands. Sunlight is very good for you...in moderation...like most things in life.

    1. Lee, I remember my grandad saying that everything should be done in moderation. If only i’d taken more notice of what he’d said.

  6. Thank you for visiting my blog Terry. I'm with you about the sun. I have never been a sun worshiper and so I was quite shocked when I had skin cancer a couple of years go. Now I wear a SPF50 hat and SPF60 sunscreen all the time and long pants and long sleeves. Sadly, for everyone, according to my surgeon. all the skin damage that causes skin cancer was done before the age of 20!! Well, I grew up in the UK in the 50s and there was no such thing as sunscreen, just Nivea cream out of a tin!! Doesn't help that I'm a red head with pale skin either.

    1. Hi Janice, it’s good that you realise the risks involved and have done something about it.

  7. I love sunny days but I do not like sitting in the sun, especially on summer days. I feel like my brain is being fried when it's really hot out and the sun is beating down on me. I also like sunny days because of the garden; it's very beneficial for that!

  8. I agree with you, I don't understand the sun worshippers. Warm and sunny is pleasant, but too much heat is just exhausting and oppressive. And it's a pain in the bum having to apply sunscreen all the time. Anything over 25C is not welcome, and then I avoid the great outdoors and head for the nearest air-conditioned venue, like a museum or art gallery.
