Religion and what it means to me...

Of everything i have done to try and make myself a better person, (and i’ve tried quite a few things...) i’d say that religion definitely comes at the bottom of the pile. There’s a perfectly good reason for that. It just doesn’t make any sense to me. Maybe it makes sense to you. Who knows?
I don’t believe that there is a God. I never have done and i never will. It doesn’t make me particularly proud to say that. But there again i’m not ashamed, either. I’ve looked at Islam, Christianity and buddism and, quite frankly, i’m not impressed with any of them. That doesn’t mean i’m right. I just don’t know.

i’m a disabled person and want something that fulfills my needs and ambitions. I have goals and it seems that only i can achieve them. It takes some doing, but i always get there in the end. Talking of goals and achieving them, the religion of football (and it IS a religion) seems to be much stronger and more appealing than going to church, if i’m being honest about it. Football stadiums are more like churches to the average football fan than they should be and churches must be envious of the crowds that football stadiums get.

I’m much more interested in Positive Mental Attitude. I’ve given up smoking and sugar using this method. It’s very effective for me but not necessarily for you.
The first time i heard about it was from Anthony Joshua, the English boxer. He uses it as part of his training regime and he has been very successful in doing so.
i don’t know if he thought anyone else would use it, it but i have.

I would never describe myself as a religious person but i wouldn’t knock it either. Other people may have a different opinion about religion but who am i to say what is right? I just know what is right for me. Positive Mental Attitude is all about using willpower to succeed at something. I use it every morning to take my mind off the pain i feel.

  1. I'm not a religious person myself Terry, having been brought up with Christianity that was drilled into me. I can't relate. I went through a spiritual awakening a while back, it started with a positive attitude as well. I started to just open my eyes to everything around me and really appreciate nature and the universe because that's what was real to me. Since then I've come to realize I have more Pagan beliefs and that living by the seasons and celebrating the Earth is what appeals to me the most and feeds my spirit. Everyone needs to follow their own path. I think that if your way works, that's the best way to go!

    1. Hi Rain, i’ve had five years of being disabled and realised then that I had to find a way to stop smoking or risk having another stroke. Then I discovered how dangerous sugar consumption is and had to give that up too. It all started from there for me. Religion doesn’t stop you smoking. In faci it’s more of a spiritual experience, really. I wanted.something else. A mental attitude that put me above everything is what I got. It gave me the strength to achieve anything I wanted. I’m just trying to let people know that they can something to change their meagre lives. Religion isn’t the answer though I thought it was. Tomorrow will be my 23rd day of a sugar-free existence.

  2. I wish I could be religious because it must bring peace and meaning into your life. But I don't know what the hell is going on. It seems that most of the time religion brings guilt and misunderstanding, even wars.
Sometimes I wonder if god is evil, bringing suffering and disaster into the world. A crazy thought, I know.
I'm agnostic, not an atheist who imagines and hopes there is some sort of god.
I want existence to have a meaning.
I guess we must make it meaningful for ourselves.

  3. I'm not a religious person even though I was raised and immersed in a very conservative Christian environment in the home and in the neighbourhood I grew up in. But I am a spiritual person who is connected to the earth and its surroundings, and all the beauty life has to offer. That is my definition of heaven. We all need to find our way in this world. Do what's right for you. That's the best choice.

    1. Of course it is. After searching for whatever it is that you want, it may find you unaware. I don’t think any amount of persuation will do. That’s good. Find your own way in life. I think you already do.

  4. The video has a very important message, delivered by quite an amazing athlete. I was also raised going to (Christian) church but when I reached an age where I began to question it, I left and have pretty much come to the conclusion that here, today, is all we get, and we should make the most of it and try to help our fellow travellers on this little planet. Terry, you are doing so well with your positive outlook and changing old habits. You really are trying to make the most of your life and succeeding very well.

    1. Hi Jenny, thanks for watching the video. I hope it was of use to you. Joshua is a confident person and doesn’t take part in putting people down like other athletes do. He knows what he wants and how to get it.i would never bet against him.

  5. I profess that I believe in God the Creator and I also believe that Jesus is my Savior but I'll refrain of preaching. I can only say that when I look at all the immense beauty, diversity of gifts in the universe and that life is in abundance, even in the tiniest bugs that are too small to be seen like dust mites, yet it's feces can make people react with allergies. Just by studying the complexity of every organ of the body and their functions and our senses and how our mind works, the sound of music and radio waves, etc. etc... There is so much order in the universe, in the seasons and the rhythm of things. I have experienced the presence of God in my life and I have felt his love after several life changing experiences. Yes, I believe.

    1. Good for you Julia. I have every respect for you and your beliefs. It’s the least you deserve. You may be right.

  6. I knew from an early age that God, heaven and all that stuff was a load of baloney. Unlike you, I am quite intolerant of religiosity as it has caused and continues to cause so much division and death in this world. That saying that "everybody is entitled to their own views" is stupid. Was Hitler entitled to his views? Was The Yorkshire Ripper entitled to his views? Should we respect the views of Islamic State warriors?

    1. Hi YP, they are very stringent rules. The right to free speech is part of the American constitution isn’t it? Maybe you should tell them they’re stupid? It’s ok to have an opinion but you can’t then decide who has free speech and who doesn’t have it. It’s very dictatorial or maybe you intended it to sound that way. You say you’re intolerant of religiosity which is like putting all of your cards on the table whereas you should always persuade people why.

  7. You probably already know that I am pretty religious. I was raised in the church so I guess it was my default position for a long time but there was a a point when my husband worked hard to stop me from getting to church and I realised I did actively want to be there. It's true that religion does a lot of damage but Jesus didn't and he is the one I follow. Where there is humanity there will be corruption and that is the problem with religion.

  8. I know that you’re trying to quit sugar but I didn’t know about the husband who was so intolerant of your religiosity that he tried to stop you from going to church. That’s awful.

  9. I totally agree with you about using our minds for positive things whenever possible, even though it can be rough at times. As a Christian, one of the things I've learned is having a sense of peace, and remembering to treat others with kindness, tolerance and service. Had I not learned those things at an early age, I may very well have gone rogue in the world.(lol) I love that you can talk about your feelings and thoughts here and there won't be any judgement. We all have to live our lives in the best way that makes us comfortable, so kudos to you for sharing what works best for you. The bottom line is that we all love you here for who you are, and not your religion. Hugs...RO

    1. Thank you RO, tomorrow will be my 25th day without sugar. It’s taken some doing but I knew it would. It’s all about the mind. I think religion is much the same way. You learn to accept the hardship if you want to get to the next level.

    3. Thanks RO, 25 days is not as impressive as 365 days. That’s what i’m aiming for. I’m not trying to impress anyone, though. It’s just a test of endurance for myself. There are some people who are much more impressive than me with the things that they do. There are young kids going through hell. That is all they will ever know.
